're following this hour, slow pace of storm recovery efforts in the northeast. 12 days after sandy, some residents saying they are not receiving any help from fema or even the red cross. with such widespread devastation residents are dealing without basic services. that before the storm they took for granted. >> no water. no heat. no lights, garbage not being picked up. garbage, halfway. garbage thrown everywhere. smell. the environment out here is terrible as far as smelling. odor is horrendous. it's depressing. >> gregg: anna is covering this live at staten island. >> we are 300 yards from the water at one of six dumping stations around staten island. we have been watching this debris pile up for two weeks in the nor'easter that hit last week. it did slow the crews. it's quite an active scene behind me today. a sign of progress being made. that is good sign. also hundreds of volunteers piled into buses at city hall this morning with their own tools and shovels helping out super storm sandy victims. volunteers sorting goods going house to house and cleaning up parks. groups are leaving

york and new jersey. in the aftermath of hurricane sandy drivers that can actually find an open gas station have to deal with lines that stretch for miles and miles and sometimes, when they finally get to that gas station, they run out of gas. so you've got folks sitting in those lines and you've got gas in the storage tanks and in the pipelines and in the tankers across the northeast but in many cases the company can not, for power reasons, get that gasoline distributed to the places where it needs to go. 60% of the gas stations in new jersey are closed. i also heard numbers as high as 80%. 70% of the stations in long island are closed. think about that. that's a huge percentage of the gas stations in both of these highly populated states that are not even open for business. so it is a really, really tough situation out there. for those lucky enough to get to the pump, actually paying for their gas is another concern. >> i just spent $30,000 getting my home repaired and it is all gone. >> we have nothing. no credit cards. nothing in our bank accounts. $15 in my pocket. nowhere to g

without power two weeks after hurricane sandy slammed into the northeast. they're not the only ones suffering. folks in new york city usually head to coney island to line up for music park -- amusement park rides but now they're lining up just to get something to eat. jonathan hunt is there. jonathan, how is it going? >> reporter: extraordinary to see scenes like this in 20th century america. some people have just trying to get the basics of life. they're picking up canned goods over here. over here we have well, military-style meals ready to eat. gatorade bottles, cases of water. and everything is numbered. they're allowed to take two canned goods. one gatorade. up to a case of water and then there is laundry detergent further down there as well. a lot of these people live in the project buildings behind me, rick, where they have been struggling to get by for two weeks now since hurricane sandy hit. i have to say the spirit we found among most of the people here, while they acknowledge their difficulty they're all determined to push through. listen. >> we don't have any electricity

after hard-hit area in new york a massive cleanup underway in a community devastated by superstorm sandy. nearly two weeks after it hit many residents say they feel forgotten. jonathan hunt live in belle harbor, new york, with more. jonathan? >> reporter: jenna, this is belle harbor, part of the rock aways peninsula. this part is belle harbor hard hit. not just water that did damage but fires swept through the street taking out many, many homes. down here you see the sandbags you see the family that lived in the home to try to prevent waters and not much good with the surge they got and fire that did so much damage. this is the porch. this bmw completely flooded. the water down on the floor boards of the car there, extensive are damage to the inside you can see quite clearly. one of the major problems here as it is in so many communities is power. the long island power authority is responsible here. lipa, as it is known. still 29 thousand people in the rockaways do not have power. they have crews from phoenix, arizona. they have crews from all over the country to get this done. you look
